Suicide Squad is one of the highest-grossing of the Worlds of DC movies ($747 million worldwide). It's also one of the worst-reviewed of that franchise (28% on Rotten Tomatoes), also known as the DC Extended Universe. The former being more important to the studios, there was no doubt the comic book adaptation, focused on a team of villains gathered to save the world, would get a sequel. Improving upon the original would be a bonus, and doing so would be an easy goal.
Various filmmakers have been linked to Suicide Squad 2 as possibilities to replace the original's David Ayer, most recently Gavin O'Connor (The Accountant). The latest, however, is a very interesting pick. James Gunn (pictured), who recently parted ways with Disney and Marvel without finishing out his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, was rumored to be wanted by Warner Bros. for one of their DC projects. Reportedly, they've picked him for this one.
For now, Gunn is simply on board to write the sequel, but there's a good chance that if the studio loves his script, he'll also be given the job of directing Suicide Squad 2. Given that he's said to be bringing a whole new take to the property, we can't be sure all the characters from the first movie will be back. We'll just have to wait and see how this moves forward.
Here's everything we know about Suicide Squad 2:
Who will be back for the sequel?
Given the popularity of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, there's no way she won't be returning for Suicide Squad 2. The actress is already reprising the role for Birds of Prey and a Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off, however. Other stars from the original expected to come back include Will Smith as Deadshot and Karen Fukuhara as Katana. Jared Leto was also said to be back as the Joker.
But none of the actors are confirmed, and there's a chance that the sequel could go in a bit of a different direction than the original, especially if claims of recasting wind up being true. Depending on who winds up at the helm of the sequel, they may at least bring in some of their favorite regular collaborators.
Who is joining the cast this time around?
Dwayne Johnson has been rumored to have a part in Suicide Squad 2 as DC villain Black Adam, but that has never been confirmed as official, and with another change in director, that idea could be out the window anyway.
Who is directing the movie?
At the moment, there is no director on board. Previously, we'd heard about Mel Gibson (Braveheart), Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) and Gavin O'Connor (The Accountant) being in contention for the job. The current favorite is James Gunn, best known for the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which would imply Suicide Squad 2 could be a bit lighter, funnier and weirder than the first installment.
Who is writing the screenplay?
Gunn is presently in talks to re-write the sequel's screenplay, which could lead to him also directing the movie. Previously, such names as Zak Penn (Ready Player One) and Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan) were said to be working on the script for the follow-up.
When does it come out?
Warner Bros. has yet to reveal a release date for Suicide Squad 2, but with the movie starting over at the script stage now, it could be a few years away at best.
